# Annuities explained: fixed, fixed-index, MYGA, income riders and surrender charges

An annuity is a contract with an insurance company. You pay in a lump sum or over time, and the insurer pays interest or income later. Fixed annuities credit a stated rate. Fixed-index annuities link credits to an index. Both usually carry surrender charges, so early withdrawals can cost you.

01

## A contract with an insurer

Guarantees depend on the insurer's ability to pay. Annuities are not FDIC insured.

02

## Fixed, indexed, or variable

Fixed pays a stated rate. Indexed ties credits to an index. Variable invests in subaccounts and is a securities product.

03

## Surrender charges

Withdrawals above the free amount during the surrender period can cost a percentage of the money withdrawn.

04

## Income riders cost extra

A rider can create a guaranteed income stream. It often has a fee and rules about how the income is figured.

05

## Not for everyone

If you may need the money soon, or want full liquidity, an annuity may be the wrong tool.

## What is an annuity?

An annuity is a contract with an insurance company. You pay a lump sum or a series of payments. In return, the insurer promises interest, a lump sum, or income later, as the contract says. The [NAIC](https://content.naic.org/insurance-topics/annuities) explains that annuities can be immediate or deferred, and fixed, indexed, or variable.

Annuities are not life insurance, but insurers sell both. Epic Life Group is an independent agency, not an insurer. Our licensed agents compare annuity carriers by phone. Annuity sales require the right licenses, and which products we can discuss depends on your state. This page is general education, not tax, legal, or investment advice.

## What are the main types of annuities?

The NAIC notes that variable annuities are registered with the SEC and that the owner bears the investment risk. Fixed and indexed annuities carry a minimum guaranteed rate.

## How does a fixed-index annuity work?

A fixed-index annuity credits interest based on an index. It does not invest your money in the index. The SEC’s [bulletin on indexed annuities](https://www.investor.gov/introduction-investing/general-resources/news-alerts/alerts-bulletins/investor-bulletins/updated-investor-bulletin-indexed-annuities) explains these products for investors.

Term

Plain meaning

Cap

The most the contract credits for a period

Participation rate

The share of the index gain that is credited

Spread

An amount subtracted from the index gain

Floor

The lowest credit, often zero

Crediting period

How long the index is measured, often a year

Caps, participation rates, and spreads are often adjustable by the insurer at set intervals, within contract limits. A high rate today does not promise a high rate later. A floor of zero protects against index loss, but fees on riders may still reduce your value.

For a plain comparison, see [fixed vs fixed-index annuities](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/guides/fixed-vs-fixed-index-annuity).

## What are surrender charges?

A surrender charge is a fee if you withdraw more than the free amount during the surrender period. The SEC says the surrender period for indexed annuities typically lasts six to ten years, or even longer, and that surrender charges reduce both value and return. See [surrender charge](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/surrender-charge), [surrender period](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/surrender-period), and [free withdrawal](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/free-withdrawal).

Other costs of early access:

- A 10 percent federal tax penalty on withdrawals before age 59 and a half may apply, per the SEC. Ask a tax professional.
- A [market value adjustment](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/market-value-adjustment) can raise or lower what you receive on early exit.
- Some contracts forfeit credited interest if you withdraw early.

Always ask for the surrender schedule in writing.

## What is an income rider?

An [income rider](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/income-rider) is an optional feature that creates a guaranteed income stream, often through a separate “income base.” That income base may not be the cash you can withdraw. Riders often carry an annual fee and rules about when income can start. Ask how the payment is figured, what the fee is, and what happens to the rider if you withdraw early.

Annuities are not FDIC insured. State guaranty associations offer protection if an insurer fails, and [NOLHGA](https://nolhga.com/policyholders/how-youre-protected/) describes how this works. Limits vary by state, so check yours.

## Who is an annuity a good fit for?

- People who want principal protection and can leave money untouched for the surrender period.
- Savers who want a defined rate for a set period (MYGA).
- Retirees who want guaranteed income and have other money for emergencies.

## Who should avoid annuities?

- Anyone who may need the money in the next several years.
- People who have not built an emergency fund.
- Buyers who are being pushed to move retirement money or surrender a product without a clear reason. Ask for a written comparison of costs and benefits.
- People who cannot explain the surrender schedule back to the agent.
- Anyone who is being promised “market gains with no risk.” No product does that.

## What protections do buyers have?

The [NAIC](https://content.naic.org/insurance-topics/annuity-suitability-and-best-interest-standard) updated its annuity model regulation (#275) in 2020 so recommendations must be in the consumer’s best interest, and many states have adopted it. Check your state’s rule. Most states also give a free look period after delivery, when you can cancel without a surrender charge. The length varies, so ask for yours.

## How do I compare annuity carriers?

1. Compare the guaranteed rate and its length (MYGA or fixed), or caps and rates (FIA), and how the carrier can change them.
2. Compare the surrender period and schedule.
3. Check the free withdrawal amount each year.
4. Compare rider fees and how income is figured.
5. Check the insurer’s financial strength rating, and its complaint record with your state insurance department.
6. Confirm the agent is licensed for annuities in your state.

## What should I ask an agent?

- Why this annuity, and what else did you consider?
- What is the surrender schedule, and how much can I take out free each year?
- What is guaranteed in the contract, and what is not?
- What does the rider cost, and how is the income figured?
- Can the insurer change rates, and how often?
- What are the tax effects of buying and taking money out? (A tax professional should confirm.)
- What is my free look period?

## Frequently asked questions

### What is an annuity?

An annuity is a contract with an insurance company. You pay premiums, and the insurer promises interest, a lump sum, or income later, depending on the contract. State insurance departments regulate fixed and indexed annuities. Variable annuities are also regulated as securities. Guarantees depend on the insurer's claims-paying ability.

### What is the difference between a fixed and a fixed-index annuity?

A fixed annuity credits a stated interest rate for a set period. A fixed-index annuity credits interest based on an index, such as the S&P 500, within caps, participation rates, or spreads, with a minimum guarantee. Indexed annuities offer more upside potential and less certainty than fixed, and neither invests directly in the market.

### What is a MYGA?

A multi-year guaranteed annuity pays a fixed rate for a set number of years, such as three, five, or seven. It works like a fixed annuity with a defined guarantee period. You usually cannot withdraw freely without a surrender charge, and the rate after the period may differ.

### What are annuity surrender charges?

A surrender charge is a fee for withdrawing more than the free amount during the surrender period. The SEC says surrender periods on indexed annuities typically last six to ten years, or even longer. The charge often declines each year. Withdrawals before age 59 and a half may also face a 10 percent federal tax penalty.

### Are annuities FDIC insured?

No. Annuities are insurance contracts. State guaranty associations offer a safety net if an insurer fails, with limits that vary by state. Check the limit for your state with your state guaranty association or NOLHGA. Choosing a financially strong insurer matters.

### Are annuities worth it?

They can be, for people who want principal protection, a set rate, or lifetime income and can leave money untouched for years. They are a poor fit for people who may need the money soon, want full control of their investments, or are buying only because of a pitch. Read the contract and compare alternatives.
