# Is final expense a good career? What agents really do

A final expense agent sells small whole life policies that help families pay funeral and end-of-life costs. Buyers are usually older adults. The work is phone or in-person sales with strict compliance rules. Income depends on production, lead cost, and chargebacks. Epic Life supports new agents with training and licensing help.

01

## Small policies, real need

Final expense covers funeral and end-of-life costs, usually with modest face amounts.

02

## Two product types

Simplified issue and guaranteed issue policies suit different health situations.

03

## Honest downsides

Chargebacks, compliance duties, and rejection are part of the job.

04

## Phone-based at Epic Life

Agents sell by phone on inbound calls, not door to door.

05

## Training included

Mandatory hands-on training uses real leads and AI call coaching.

## What does a final expense agent do?

A final expense agent helps families plan for the cost of dying. The agent finds out what the client wants to cover, checks health and budget, and places a policy with a carrier that will accept them. The policy pays a death benefit to a named beneficiary.

The product is [final expense insurance](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/final-expense-insurance), sometimes called burial insurance. Consumers can read about it on our [final expense coverage page](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/final-expense).

## Is final expense a good career?

It can be, for the right person. It is a real need, and the sale is often simple. It is also commission-only, with chargebacks and strict rules. The honest answer depends on your discipline, your lead math, and your tolerance for rejection.

Downside

## Who buys, and what do they need?

Clients are usually older adults. Many want to cover funeral costs so family members do not carry the bill. Some have health conditions that limit what they can buy. Age limits, health questions, and coverage amounts differ by carrier and by state.

Good agents listen first. They ask what the client wants to leave and what the budget is. Then they match a carrier. Having many carriers matters here. See the [carriers page](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/carriers).

## What is guaranteed issue vs simplified issue?

Both are common in final expense. The right choice depends on the client’s health.

## How does the sales process work?

At Epic Life, final expense is sold by phone on inbound calls. The usual flow:

1. Greet the caller and confirm what they asked for.
2. Ask about family, goals, budget, and health.
3. Use the comparative quoting tool to find carriers and products that fit.
4. Present one clear recommendation.
5. Complete the application, verify bank details with GIACT, and submit.
6. Follow up until the policy is issued and delivered.

You can learn this in training. Read about [telesales](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/telesales-life-insurance-agent) and [training](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/training).

## How do final expense agents get paid, and what are the risks?

Agents earn commission from carriers. Commission depends on the carrier, product, and your contract level. If a policy lapses or is cancelled early, the carrier may request some commission back. This is a chargeback. The Professional Insurance Agents association explains that carriers may request commission back when a policy lapses, is rescinded, or is cancelled within a specified period.

Guaranteed issue products often carry higher chargeback risk in the early years. Your contract sets the exact terms. Read [compensation](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/compensation) and the [chargebacks guide](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/guides/life-insurance-chargebacks).

## What does ethical selling look like in final expense?

Many final expense clients are older and on a fixed income. Ethical selling is not optional here. Fit the coverage to the client’s need and budget. Do not push a bigger policy than they can keep paying. A lapse hurts the client first, and then it hurts your commission through a chargeback.

Good practice includes:

- Explaining plainly what the policy pays and when.
- Disclosing waiting periods on guaranteed issue products.
- Checking whether the client is replacing an existing policy, and explaining the effect.
- Never promising approval before the carrier decides.
- Keeping accurate records of what you said.

The glossary covers replacement and related compliance terms. State insurance departments enforce sales practice rules, so know your state’s.

## What do clients ask most often?

Clients tend to ask four things: how much it costs, whether they will be approved, when the benefit pays, and who gets the money. Prepare plain answers. Price depends on age, health, state, and carrier. Approval depends on the carrier’s rules. Waiting periods apply to some products. The beneficiary the client names receives the benefit.

Never guess. If you do not know, say so and check. Accurate answers build trust, and trust builds referrals.

## How does Epic Life support new final expense agents?

- Help getting licensed, with resources and guidance
- Contracts with about 110 carriers
- Mandatory hands-on training using real leads
- AI call analysis with scorecards and real-time guidance
- A licensed service team, case design help, and help with hard-to-place cases

You do not need prior insurance experience. See [new agents](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/new-agents). The path is: get your resident license, add states (Epic Life requires at least 10), finish contracting and training, and track your lead cost, close rate, and chargebacks.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does a final expense agent sell?

A final expense agent sells life insurance sized to cover funeral, burial or cremation, and related bills. Most policies are whole life with smaller face amounts. Epic Life agents can also sell mortgage protection, term life, whole life, IUL, accidental death, and annuities, depending on carrier and license.

### How much do final expense agents make?

It varies a lot, and Epic Life does not publish income figures. Pay is commission. It depends on how many policies you sell, the carriers and products, your contract level, what you spend on leads, and chargebacks. Be wary of any agency that quotes specific earnings without proof.

### Who buys final expense insurance?

Mostly older adults who want to leave money for funeral costs so their family does not have to. Many have health issues that make big policies hard to get. Needs, age limits, and health rules differ by carrier and state, so the agent matches the client to the right carrier.

### What is the difference between guaranteed issue and simplified issue?

Simplified issue asks a few health questions and can decline you. Guaranteed issue asks none and accepts nearly everyone in the eligible age range, but pays a reduced benefit during an initial waiting period. Premiums are usually higher for guaranteed issue. Terms vary by carrier.

### What are the downsides of being a final expense agent?

The main ones are chargebacks when policies lapse early, lead costs that come out of your profit, rejection on the phone, and strict compliance rules. Your income is not guaranteed. You are a 1099 contractor and pay your own taxes. Honest agents plan for all of these.

### How long until my first commission?

It depends on how long licensing and contracting take, then how fast you complete training and sell and submit a policy. After submission, carriers must approve and issue it before commission is paid. Timing and advance terms differ by carrier and contract, so ask for them in writing.
