# How life insurance licensing works across multiple states

You get a resident life insurance license in your home state first. Then you add nonresident licenses in other states, usually through NIPR, to sell to clients there. Epic Life requires licenses in at least 10 states. Its most successful agents hold licenses in 25 or more.

01

## Resident first

Your home state issues your resident license. Other states build on it.

02

## Nonresident next

Add states through NIPR to sell to clients where they live.

03

## 10-state minimum

Epic Life requires licenses in at least 10 states.

04

## 25 or more

Epic Life's most successful agents hold licenses in 25 or more states.

05

## Verify the rules

Every state sets its own fees, education, and renewal rules.

## How does life insurance licensing work?

You must hold an insurance producer license to sell life insurance. A producer is a person who sells, solicits, or negotiates insurance, according to the NAIC. State regulators issue the licenses. There is no single national license. You get licensed one state at a time.

Epic Life helps new agents with resources and guidance for licensing. You do not need prior insurance experience. Start with [new agents](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/new-agents) if you have not begun.

## What is a resident license?

A resident license comes from the state where you live. It is usually the first license you earn. For most people this means a pre-licensing course if your state requires one, a state exam, a background check, and an application with fees.

Each state sets its own details. NIPR publishes a state-by-state requirements page with fees and instructions. Use it before you pay for a course.

## What is a nonresident license?

A nonresident license lets you sell in a state where you do not live. NIPR defines a nonresident as someone licensed as a resident in one state who is seeking licensure in another. You add these licenses on top of your resident license.

The NAIC Producer Licensing Model Act says a person previously licensed for the same lines of authority in another state shall not be required to complete pre-licensing education or an exam. State laws differ, so confirm on NIPR.

## How do I add states through NIPR?

NIPR, the National Insurance Producer Registry, is an affiliate of the NAIC. It runs a uniform system for producer licensing. Here is the usual path.

1. Confirm your resident license is active.
2. Look up the target state’s nonresident requirements on NIPR.
3. Apply through NIPR LicenseHub. You provide your NPN, date of birth, and an electronic payment method.
4. Pay the state’s fees and respond to any requests for documents.
5. Wait for review. NIPR says states typically take 7 to 10 days.
6. Record the new license’s renewal date and CE rules.

See the glossary: [NPN](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/npn), [NIPR](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/nipr), [nonresident license](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/nonresident-license), and [license reciprocity](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/license-reciprocity).

## Why does Epic Life require 10 states?

Inbound calls arrive from many states. A license is required in the client’s state. If you are licensed in only one or two, you cannot take most calls. Epic Life sets a minimum of 10 states. It says its most successful agents hold licenses in 25 or more.

That is a statement about licensing breadth. It is not an income claim. Pay still depends on production, lead spend, and chargebacks. See [compensation](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/compensation).

## How does reciprocity help?

Reciprocity means one state accepts a license from another with fewer extra steps. The NAIC reports that a producer licensed in one state generally once had to meet separate requirements in every other state. Congress passed a law in 1999 that pushed states toward reciprocity and uniform standards. The NAIC says much progress has been made, but several large states are not yet fully reciprocal.

The practical result for you: nonresident licensing is easier than it used to be, but it is not identical in every state. Check each one.

## What should I plan for after getting licensed?

- Track every renewal date and CE requirement in a spreadsheet.
- Keep your contact information current with each state.
- Budget for fees in each state. They vary.
- Get carrier appointments. A license does not authorize you to sell for a specific carrier. See [carriers](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/carriers).
- Consider E&O coverage if your agency recommends it.

## What is the best order for adding states?

Epic Life does not publish a required order. A sensible approach is to start with your home state, add the states where you expect to take the most calls, and ask Epic Life where its calls come from. Read the full [multi-state license guide](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/guides/multi-state-life-insurance-license).

## What are common licensing mistakes?

- Buying a course before checking your state’s requirements on NIPR.
- Letting a license lapse because a renewal date was missed.
- Forgetting to update your address or contact information with a state.
- Assuming a nonresident state has the same CE rules as your home state.
- Selling in a state before the license is active.

Selling without a valid license is a serious problem and can lead to penalties. Always confirm the license is active before you take a call from a client in that state.

## How should I plan my timeline and budget?

Plan in stages. Each stage has its own costs and waiting time.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between a resident and a nonresident license?

A resident license is issued by the state where you live. A nonresident license lets you sell in another state while you stay a resident of your home state. NIPR describes a nonresident as someone licensed as a resident in one state who seeks licensure in another.

### How do I apply for a nonresident license?

Most states accept nonresident applications through NIPR. You need your National Producer Number (NPN) and an electronic payment method, and each state sets its own fees. NIPR says states typically take 7 to 10 days to review applications. Check each state's page on NIPR first.

### Why does Epic Life require 10 states?

Inbound calls come from many states. The more states you hold, the more of those calls you can legally take. Epic Life sets a minimum of 10 states and says its most successful agents are licensed in 25 or more. It does not publish call data by state.

### Do I have to retake the exam in each state?

Usually not for nonresident licenses. The NAIC model act says a person previously licensed for the same lines in another state shall not be required to complete pre-licensing education or an exam. States may differ, so check each one on NIPR before you assume.

### Do I need continuing education in every state?

Each state sets its own continuing education (CE) and renewal rules. Many states let a nonresident meet CE through the home state, but not all do. Track renewal dates and CE hours for every state you hold, because a lapse can stop you from selling there.

### How do I check that an agent is licensed?

Look the agent up through the state department of insurance or the NIPR producer database using the agent's name or National Producer Number. This is how clients, and other agents, can confirm a license is active in a given state.
