# How to become a life insurance agent with no experience

You do not need a degree or insurance experience to become a life insurance agent. You need a state producer license, which usually means pre-licensing study, a state exam, and a background check. Then you contract with carriers. Epic Life helps new agents get licensed with resources and guidance.

01

## No experience needed

Epic Life accepts new agents with no prior insurance background. You learn the work after you are licensed.

02

## License comes first

You must hold a state producer license before you can sell. Your home state sets the rules.

03

## Help getting licensed

Epic Life gives new agents resources and guidance for the licensing process.

04

## Training uses real leads

After licensing and onboarding, a mandatory hands-on program teaches the Epic Life sales process.

05

## You work for yourself

Agents are 1099 independent contractors. You own your book of business.

## Can you become a life insurance agent with no experience?

Yes. Experience is not a legal requirement. The state requires a license, and the license requires study, an exam, and a background review. Epic Life accepts new agents with no insurance background and helps them get licensed with resources and guidance.

That said, being new does not mean being unprepared. You will be selling a financial product to families. The work is a sales job with rules. This page walks through each step so you can judge whether it fits you.

## What are the steps to become a life insurance agent?

The path has six steps. The order matters, because you cannot sell until you are licensed and contracted.

1\. Check your state’s rules

The NAIC describes a producer as a person who sells, solicits, or negotiates insurance. State regulators license producers. The NAIC Producer Licensing Model Act uses 18 as the minimum age, but your state’s law controls.

## How do you get a life insurance license?

You apply to your home state. That is your resident license. Most states route applications through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR), which is an affiliate of the NAIC. NIPR asks for a Social Security number if you are a first-time applicant, your date of birth, and an electronic payment method.

Each state has its own fees, exam, and continuing education rules. NIPR publishes a state-by-state requirements page. Use it before you buy any course.

For a deeper look at multi-state licensing, read our [licensing page](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/licensing) and the [multi-state life insurance license guide](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/guides/multi-state-life-insurance-license).

## What happens after you pass the exam?

A license does not let you sell for a specific insurance company. You also need a carrier appointment, sometimes called contracting. The NAIC model act says a license itself does not create authority to represent a carrier. Each carrier decides whether to contract with you.

At Epic Life, contracting support is part of the back office. Epic Life has contracts with about 110 carriers. See the [carriers page](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/carriers) for how that choice helps your clients.

## How does Epic Life help a new agent?

Epic Life helps with licensing first. After licensing and onboarding, you enter a mandatory, hands-on, progressive training program. You use real leads to learn the Epic Life sales process and carrier systems. Training includes daily sessions, one-on-one time, webinars, and recorded trainings.

The back office also helps. A licensed service team, case design help, product illustrations, and a help desk support you on hard cases. Read more on the [training page](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/training).

## What is the job once you are licensed?

You sell life insurance by phone, on inbound calls. You are a 1099 independent contractor, not an employee. The IRS says independent contractors are self-employed and owe self-employment tax. You manage your own taxes and expenses.

Epic Life agents take inbound calls from direct call-in leads and live transfers. Agents buy those leads at a discounted rate. They are not free. See [inbound calls](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/inbound-calls) for how that works and [compensation](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/compensation) for how pay works.

## Is this career right for you?

It fits people who are coachable, comfortable on the phone, and able to manage their own time. It does not fit people who need a guaranteed paycheck. Your income depends on your production, your lead spend, and chargebacks. Epic Life does not publish income figures, and no honest agency can promise one.

Questions to ask yourself:

- Can I cover my living costs while I build a book of business?
- Am I willing to be coached on recorded calls?
- Can I follow compliance rules, including Do Not Call?

## What does getting started cost, and how long does it take?

Costs and timing vary by state. Epic Life does not publish a single number, and this page does not guess one. Use this table to build your own budget.

NIPR says states typically take 7 to 10 days to review an application once it is submitted. Study time, exam scheduling, and carrier contracting add to the total. Ask Epic Life how contracting works while your state application is in review.

## What mistakes do new agents make?

Most mistakes come from rushing or from skipping the money questions.

- They study for the exam but never learn how the sales call works.
- They pick a single state and later find they cannot take most calls.
- They ignore lead cost until the bills arrive.
- They skip coaching because they feel awkward on recorded calls.
- They treat a chargeback as a surprise instead of a planned cost.

You can avoid all five. Read [compensation](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/careers/compensation) before you start, and plan to add states early.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I become a life insurance agent with no experience?

Yes. Most people who sell life insurance start with no insurance background. The legal barrier is the license, not experience. Once you hold a license, Epic Life provides onboarding and a hands-on training program that uses real leads, so you learn the work by doing it with support.

### Do I need a college degree to sell life insurance?

No. State insurance departments license producers. Typical steps are an age check, an exam, and a background review, and each state sets its own rules. Check your state's requirements on its department of insurance site or on NIPR before you start.

### How long does it take to get a life insurance license?

It varies by state and by how fast you study. You complete any required pre-licensing course, pass the state exam, and submit an application. NIPR says states typically take 7 to 10 days to review applications. Plan for several weeks from start to finish, not a guarantee.

### How much does a life insurance license cost?

Costs depend on your state. Expect fees for a pre-licensing course, the exam, fingerprints, and the state application. NIPR lists each state's fees by state. Epic Life states it helps new agents get licensed with resources and guidance. Ask about current support when you apply.

### What is the difference between a life-only and a life and health license?

A line of authority is the kind of insurance a license lets you sell. A life-only license covers life insurance and annuity products. A life and health license adds health lines. Epic Life agents sell life products, so confirm with your state which line of authority you need.

### Can I be licensed in more than one state?

Yes. You hold a resident license in your home state, then apply for nonresident licenses in other states, usually through NIPR. Epic Life requires licenses in at least 10 states, and its most successful agents hold licenses in 25 or more.
