# HIPAA

HIPAA is a federal law that sets privacy and security rules for protected health information held by health plans, providers, and their business associates. It also gives people rights over their health records.

## Why it matters

Life insurers collect health details during underwriting. HIPAA applies to health care providers and plans, and it controls when they can release records. Life insurers often get a signed authorization from the applicant to see medical records. Epic Life states it processes and stores protected health information on AWS in a HIPAA-compliant way. Families should read any authorization form and know they may ask what is shared.
