# Resident License

A resident license is the producer license issued by the state where an agent lives or keeps a principal place of business. It is usually the agent's home state license and the base for all other state licenses.

## Why it matters

The resident state sets the exam and pre-licensing rules the agent must pass. An agent holds one resident license at a time. Moving to a new state usually means applying for a new resident license there, and the old one may convert to nonresident status. Agents who plan to sell by phone across many states should start with a clean resident license, since many states grant nonresident licenses based on it. Rules vary by state.
