# Risk Class

A risk class is the category of insured people a carrier uses to group applicants with similar expected risk. It decides which premium rate the applicant pays.

## Why it matters

Risk classes are built from health, age, sex, tobacco use, and sometimes occupation. They are the basis for fair pricing across the pool. Different carriers set different classes. Final expense plans may use simple groups such as level, graded, or modified. Ask which class you fall into when you compare quotes, and note that the names vary by carrier.
