# Spouse Rider

A spouse rider is an add-on that adds term life coverage on the policyholder's spouse to the main policy. It gives a smaller amount of coverage for a single added premium and may include a conversion option.

## Why it matters

The rider offers an easy way to cover a second adult, often at a lower price than a separate policy. The coverage amount is usually capped, and it may end at a set age or when the main policy ends. Some riders let the spouse convert to a permanent policy. Separate policies give each spouse independent control, which matters in a divorce or if the main policyholder dies. Terms vary by carrier and state.
