# Burial insurance: is it different from final expense, and is it worth it?

Burial insurance is a small whole life policy that pays a cash benefit to your beneficiary for funeral and burial costs. It is the same product as final expense insurance under another name. It is not a pre-need funeral contract, which is sold by a funeral home and tied to that provider.

01

## Same product, different name

Burial insurance, funeral insurance, and final expense insurance usually describe the same small whole life policy.

02

## Money is not locked to a funeral home

The beneficiary receives cash. They can choose any funeral home, or spend it on other bills.

03

## Not a pre-need contract

A pre-need contract is a deal with one funeral home. Burial insurance is a life policy with an insurer.

04

## Waiting periods vary

Some plans pay in full right away. Others pay less in the first two or three years. Always ask.

05

## You can buy for a parent

A parent can be the insured if they apply and consent. The policy owner and beneficiary can be an adult child.

## What is burial insurance?

Burial insurance is a small whole life policy that pays a lump sum to your beneficiary after you die. Families use it for the funeral, burial or cremation, and related bills. It is sold under several names, including funeral insurance and [final expense insurance](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/final-expense).

If you read ten ads, you may think there are ten products. There is one. What differs is the carrier, the health questions, the price, and the waiting period.

Epic Life Group is an independent agency. We are not the insurer. Our licensed agents compare carriers for you by phone.

## Is burial insurance different from pre-need insurance?

Yes. Burial insurance is a life insurance policy that pays your beneficiary. A pre-need contract is an agreement with one funeral home, sometimes funded by an insurance policy, that fixes services in advance.

For a full side-by-side, read [burial insurance vs life insurance vs pre-need](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/guides/burial-insurance-vs-life-insurance-vs-preneed). A [pre-need contract](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/pre-need-funeral-contract) can make sense if you want to pick every detail now. Read the cancellation and transfer terms first.

## How much does a funeral cost, and how much coverage do I need?

Start with a number. The NFDA reports 2023 median funeral home charges of $8,300 for a viewing and burial and $6,280 for a viewing and cremation, as reproduced by [Dignity Memorial](https://www.dignitymemorial.com/pre-planning/funeral-costs/average-funeral-cost). These exclude cemetery, monument, and similar third-party costs.

Use the [FTC Funeral Rule](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/complying-funeral-rule) to get real local prices. Funeral homes must give you an itemized price list and must give prices by phone. You may choose only the items you want, and they cannot charge a handling fee for a casket you bought elsewhere.

Then add other costs your family would face: medical bills, travel, and small debts. Size the policy to that total, not to a sales pitch.

## Who is burial insurance a good fit for?

- Seniors who want their family spared a large unexpected bill.
- People with health conditions that make big policies hard to get.
- Adult children who want a plan for a parent.
- People who want a guaranteed-for-life premium instead of a term that ends.

## Who should consider something else?

- Anyone with a mortgage or dependents. Their needs are larger, so look at [term life](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/term-life) or [mortgage protection](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/mortgage-protection).
- People who already have enough in savings, or a paid-up policy that covers final costs.
- People who can afford a funded pre-need plan and want fixed services.
- Buyers who cannot keep up premiums. A lapsed policy pays nothing.

## What are the waiting periods?

Many burial plans use tiers based on your health answers. Terms differ by carrier.

Tier

What it often means

Waiting period

Level benefit

Full death benefit from the start

None

Graded benefit

Partial payout, often premiums plus interest, if you die early from illness

Often two to three years

Guaranteed issue

No health questions

Often two to three years

See [guaranteed issue life insurance](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/guaranteed-issue) for more. Accidental deaths are often paid in full even in the waiting period. Confirm in the contract.

## How do I compare burial insurance companies?

1. Get quotes for the same face amount from several carriers.
2. Match the benefit type. A cheap graded plan is not equal to a level plan.
3. Confirm the premium is guaranteed not to rise.
4. Check the maximum issue age and the grace period.
5. Look up the carrier’s complaint record on your state insurance department site.
6. Check if there is a living benefit rider for terminal illness.

## What should I ask an agent?

- Is this the best benefit tier I qualify for, and did you check others?
- What does my family get if I die in year one, and in year three?
- Can the carrier raise my rate?
- Can I cancel in the free look period? Many states require at least 10 days after delivery, per [South Carolina’s insurance department](https://online.doi.sc.gov/Eng/Public/Faqs/lifefaq.aspx), though rules vary.
- Is the policy owner also the person insured?

## Frequently asked questions

### Is burial insurance the same as final expense insurance?

Yes, in almost all cases. Both names describe a small permanent life insurance policy that pays a lump sum for end-of-life costs. Agents and marketers use the terms interchangeably. The policy form, not the label, tells you the real terms, so compare the benefit type and waiting period.

### Does burial insurance have to be paid to a funeral home?

No. A standard burial insurance policy pays your named beneficiary in cash. They can pay any funeral provider or use the money for other needs. A pre-need contract is different, because you pre-pay a specific funeral home for specific services.

### How much does a funeral cost?

The National Funeral Directors Association reports 2023 median funeral home charges of $8,300 for a viewing and burial and $6,280 for a viewing and cremation. Cemetery and other third-party items cost extra. Prices vary by region, so ask providers for their price lists.

### Does burial insurance cover cremation?

Yes. The benefit is cash, so it can pay for cremation, burial, a memorial, or other costs. The policy does not restrict how the beneficiary spends it. Check any rider or pre-need paperwork that says otherwise.

### What happens if I stop paying premiums?

Coverage can end. Policies have a grace period, often about a month, but you should confirm yours. A whole life policy may also have non-forfeiture options. Ask what you would get back, if anything, before you buy.

### Can I buy burial insurance for my parent?

Usually yes, if your parent applies, answers the health questions, and signs. You can be the owner and beneficiary and pay the premiums. Some carriers require insurable interest. Do not apply for someone without their knowledge.
