# Guaranteed issue life insurance: who gets approved, what the waiting period means

Guaranteed issue life insurance accepts applicants within an age range with no health questions and no medical exam. In return, it costs more per dollar, has low coverage limits, and usually has a waiting period of about two to three years where death from illness pays back premiums plus interest instead of the full benefit.

01

## No health questions

Approval does not depend on your health, as long as you meet the age and state rules.

02

## Waiting period

The full benefit usually starts after about two to three years. Check the exact period for each carrier.

03

## Premiums back if early

If you die of illness in the waiting period, many plans pay premiums paid plus interest. Accidental death is often paid in full.

04

## Small amounts, higher price

Limits are low and cost per dollar of coverage is higher than other plans. The carrier takes more risk.

05

## Try simplified issue first

If your health allows, a simplified issue plan may pay from day one at a lower price.

## What is guaranteed issue life insurance?

Guaranteed issue life insurance accepts you without health questions or a medical exam, if you meet the carrier’s age and state rules. It is usually a small whole life policy. It is the easiest life insurance to get and, per dollar of coverage, among the most expensive.

Epic Life Group is an independent agency, not an insurer. Ask a licensed agent whether a simplified issue policy might fit before you settle on guaranteed issue.

## How does the waiting period work?

Because the insurer cannot screen out sick applicants, it limits risk in the early years. This is often called a [graded death benefit](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/graded-death-benefit) or a modified benefit. Terms vary, so treat the numbers below as typical, not universal.

If death happens

Typical result

By illness, in the waiting period

After the waiting period

A [modified death benefit](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/modified-death-benefit) works the same way. The waiting period is often about two to three years.

## Who is guaranteed issue a good fit for?

- People who were declined for other life insurance.
- People with serious conditions who want a small payout for final costs.
- Seniors who need a plan and do not want to answer health questions.
- Families who want a guaranteed way to cover part of a funeral. See [final expense insurance](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/final-expense).

## Who should try other plans first?

- Healthy people. [Term](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/term-life) or [whole life](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/whole-life) will usually cost less.
- Those with moderate health issues. Many carriers offer graded or level final expense plans.
- Anyone who needs a large amount. Guaranteed issue limits are low.
- Anyone who may be hospitalized soon. Waiting periods apply, so an early illness death might not pay the full benefit.

Answer health questions truthfully on any plan. A false answer can lead to a denied claim later.

## What does it cost?

Price depends on age, sex, coverage amount, state, and carrier. Older ages cost more. Compared to simplified issue, guaranteed issue costs more per dollar of coverage. We do not publish rates, because they differ by carrier and change. ## What should I ask an agent?

- Did you check whether I could qualify for simplified issue or a graded plan first?
- What is the exact waiting period, and what does my family get if I die in it?
- What is paid for accidental death in the first two years?
- Is the premium guaranteed never to rise?
- What are the free look rules? States give at least 10 days in many cases, per [South Carolina’s insurance department](https://online.doi.sc.gov/Eng/Public/Faqs/lifefaq.aspx).
- What happens if I miss a payment?

The death benefit is generally not taxable income to the beneficiary, per [IRS Publication 525](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p525). Interest can be taxed.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is guaranteed issue life insurance?

It is life insurance with no health questions and no medical exam. If you are in the eligible age range and state, you are accepted. It is usually small whole life coverage. The trade-off is a waiting period before the full death benefit applies, higher cost, and low maximum coverage.

### What is the waiting period on guaranteed issue?

It is a period, often about two to three years, during which a death from natural causes pays only a refund of premiums, usually with interest. Accidental death is often covered in full from day one. The length and terms differ by carrier, so read the policy before you buy.

### Is guaranteed issue the same as simplified issue?

No. Simplified issue asks a short set of health questions and may pay in full from day one. Guaranteed issue asks none and uses a waiting period. If you can pass the health questions, simplified issue is often cheaper and gives more coverage. Your agent should check that first.

### Who can get guaranteed issue life insurance?

Usually people within a set age range, such as the 50s to the 80s, though limits differ by carrier and state. It suits people who were declined or who expect to be declined for other plans. Approval means you meet the age and state rules, not that the price is best.

### Does guaranteed issue pay for a funeral?

Yes, after the waiting period for a natural death, and sooner for an accident in many plans. The benefit is cash to your beneficiary. Amounts are limited, so it may not cover everything. Check what a funeral costs where you live and compare with the face amount.

### Is guaranteed issue worth it?

It can be, if you cannot qualify for other plans and want to leave something for final costs. It is a poor value if you can get simplified issue instead. Weigh the waiting period, the price, and what your family needs. An agent can check other plans first.
