# Life insurance for seniors: what you can get at 50, 60, 70, and 80

Seniors can usually still buy life insurance. At 50 and 60, term, whole life, and no-exam plans are common. At 70 and 80, options narrow to whole life, final expense, and guaranteed issue, often in smaller amounts. Price and approval depend on age, health, state, and carrier, so comparing carriers matters most.

01

## Options exist at every age

Age limits differ by carrier and product. Many plans accept applicants into their 80s.

02

## Health shapes the menu

Good health opens term and level whole life. Serious conditions may point to graded or guaranteed issue.

03

## Amounts get smaller

Older buyers usually buy smaller policies, often aimed at final costs and small debts.

04

## Price rises with age

Each year you wait generally costs more. Health changes can also close doors.

05

## Compare carriers

Carriers treat the same health condition differently. A different carrier can mean a better class or price.

## Can seniors still get life insurance?

Yes, in most cases. Maximum issue ages and coverage limits differ by carrier and product, but many plans accept applicants well into their 80s. What changes with age is the menu, the price, and the amount.

Epic Life Group is an independent agency, not an insurer. Our licensed agents compare carriers by phone, which matters for seniors because carriers treat the same health history differently.

## What policy types fit each age?

The table shows general patterns, not guarantees. Each carrier sets its own age limits and rules.

Age band

Common options

Usual focus

50s

Term, whole life, no-exam, accelerated underwriting

Income replacement, mortgage, family protection

60s

Term (shorter terms), whole life, simplified issue

Final costs, remaining debts, spouse support

70s

Whole life, final expense, simplified issue, some term

Final costs, leaving a gift, small debts

80s and up

Final expense, graded benefit, guaranteed issue

Final costs

## Life insurance for seniors over 50

At 50, you can often still choose among term, whole life, and no-exam plans. This is often the last age band where health is good enough for the lowest rates.

- Term can still be affordable for a 10 or 20 year need, like a mortgage. See [term life](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/term-life).
- Whole life locks in permanent coverage at a lower age than waiting. See [whole life](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/whole-life).
- Healthy applicants may use accelerated underwriting. See [no-exam life insurance](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/no-exam-life-insurance).

If you smoke or have a new health issue, ask about carriers that treat it more kindly. Quit-smoking can help you get a lower tobacco rating after a carrier-defined period. Ask each carrier about its rule.

## Life insurance over 60

In your 60s, term is still available, but terms may be shorter and cost more. Whole life and simplified issue become more common.

- Compare a 10 year term against whole life for your goal.
- Check convertible term if you want to keep coverage past the term.
- If you are retired, check whether work coverage will end. Group coverage often ends when you leave.

See [term life](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/term-life) for how conversion and renewal work.

## Life insurance over 70

At 70 and up, many buyers choose whole life or final expense. Amounts are smaller and aimed at final costs. Health questions matter more.

- Level benefit final expense pays in full from day one if you qualify.
- Graded plans suit moderate health problems.
- Guaranteed issue is for those who cannot qualify elsewhere.

Read [final expense insurance](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/final-expense) and the guide on [life insurance over 70](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/guides/life-insurance-over-70).

## Life insurance over 80

Options narrow, but they exist. Carriers that issue at these ages are fewer, so comparing matters. The usual choices are final expense, graded benefit, and guaranteed issue.

- Waiting periods are common. Ask what your family gets if you die in the first two or three years.
- Amounts are small. Check the funeral price list for your area. The [FTC Funeral Rule](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/complying-funeral-rule) requires funeral homes to give price lists, including by phone.
- Premiums are high per dollar of coverage. Make sure you can keep paying them.

See [guaranteed issue](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/guaranteed-issue) and [burial insurance](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/burial-insurance).

## What about 85 or 90 year olds?

Some carriers do issue at very advanced ages. Many do not. If you are 85 or older, tell the agent your age and health first so they can check which carriers are still open. If no plan fits, a funded pre-need plan or savings may be the better path. We will say so plainly.

## How does health affect approval?

Health status

Likely path

Good health

Term or level whole life, fully underwritten or simplified

Moderate conditions

Simplified issue or graded benefit

Serious conditions

Graded or guaranteed issue

Carriers often check prescription history and the MIB database. Answer truthfully. A wrong answer can lead to a denied claim. The [contestability period](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/contestability-period) is usually two years, per the [NAIC](https://content.naic.org/sites/default/files/legacy/mcas_training/2018/MCAS_Life_and_Annuity-Handout.pdf).

## How do I compare carriers for seniors?

1. Ask for quotes at the same amount and the same benefit type.
2. Compare waiting periods and what is paid in them.
3. Check that the premium cannot rise.
4. Check the issue age limit, in case you want to add coverage later.
5. Review the carrier’s complaint record with your state insurance department.
6. Compare cost per dollar of coverage, not just the monthly figure.

For pricing basics, read [how much life insurance costs](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/cost).

## What should I ask an agent?

- Which plan types am I eligible for, and what did you rule out?
- What does my family get if I die in year one?
- Can the premium go up?
- What is the free look period? States give at least 10 days in many cases, per [South Carolina’s insurance department](https://online.doi.sc.gov/Eng/Public/Faqs/lifefaq.aspx).
- Who is the beneficiary, and is there a backup?

Death benefits are generally not taxable income to the beneficiary under [IRS Publication 525](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p525).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can seniors get life insurance?

Yes, in most cases. Many carriers issue coverage into the 80s, and some beyond, with limits that differ by product. Availability and price depend on age, health, state, and carrier. If you are declined by one carrier, another may accept you, or a guaranteed issue plan may be an option.

### What is the best life insurance for seniors?

It depends on the goal. For temporary needs like a mortgage, term life may fit. For lifelong coverage and final costs, whole life or final expense is common. If health blocks other plans, guaranteed issue is a last resort. An agent can compare these for your situation.

### Can seniors get life insurance without a medical exam?

Yes. Simplified issue and guaranteed issue plans skip the exam. Simplified plans ask health questions. Guaranteed issue asks none but has a waiting period and higher cost. Some healthier seniors may also qualify for accelerated underwriting term. Compare types before choosing.

### How much does life insurance cost for a senior?

It costs more at older ages and with health problems. We do not publish a rate table because actual quotes depend on the carrier and your details. See our cost page for what drives price. A licensed agent can quote several carriers by phone.

### Is it too late to buy life insurance at 80?

Not necessarily. Some carriers issue at 80 and older, usually final expense or guaranteed issue in smaller amounts. Waiting periods may apply. Price will be higher than at a younger age, so compare options and be honest on health questions.

### Can I buy life insurance for my elderly parent?

Yes, if your parent agrees, applies, and signs. You can usually be the owner and beneficiary and pay premiums. Carriers require insurable interest and consent. Never apply for someone without their knowledge.
