# Term life insurance: how it works, what drives price, and when it ends

Term life insurance pays a death benefit only if you die during a set period, such as 10, 20, or 30 years. It is generally cheaper than permanent coverage, especially early on. When the term ends, coverage stops unless you renew or convert. It fits temporary needs like a mortgage or raising children.

01

## Coverage for a set period

You pick a term. If you die inside it, your beneficiary is paid. After it ends, coverage stops.

02

## Lower cost per dollar

Term is generally cheaper than permanent coverage because it has no lifelong guarantee and builds no cash value.

03

## Match term to need

Choose a term that runs past your mortgage, or until your youngest child is independent.

04

## Conversion can matter

A convertible policy lets you switch to permanent coverage without a new health review. Rules and deadlines vary.

05

## Age and health set price

Price rises with age and health problems. Buying younger and healthier locks in a lower rate.

## What is term life insurance?

Term life insurance covers you for a fixed period. If you die during that time, the insurer pays the death benefit to your beneficiary. If you outlive the term, the policy ends. The [NAIC](https://content.naic.org/insurance-topics/life-insurance) describes terms such as 1, 5, 10, or 20 years and says term is generally cheaper than permanent coverage, especially in the early years.

Epic Life Group is an independent agency, not an insurer. Our licensed agents compare term products across carriers by phone. Price and approval depend on your age, health, state, and the carrier.

## How does term life insurance work?

You choose an amount and a term. You pay a premium, usually monthly or yearly. On level term, the premium does not change during the term. If you die in the term, your family gets the benefit. The payout is generally not taxable income to the beneficiary, according to [IRS Publication 525](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p525).

## Who is term life a good fit for?

- Parents of young children who need large coverage at a low price.
- Homeowners who want coverage to last as long as the mortgage. Also see [mortgage protection](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/mortgage-protection).
- Anyone replacing income for a set number of working years.
- Business owners or couples covering a debt or loan that ends on a known date.

## Who should look at something else?

- People who need coverage for life, such as for final costs or for a special-needs dependent. Look at [whole life](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/whole-life) or [final expense](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/final-expense).
- Seniors with health problems who cannot pass underwriting. Look at [guaranteed issue](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/guaranteed-issue).
- People who want a savings feature. Term has none. Do not buy permanent insurance only for savings without reading the costs.

## How long should my term be?

Pick the term that matches the debt or duty it covers. A common approach is to match your longest obligation, such as a 30-year mortgage or the years until your youngest child is independent. A longer term costs more per month. A shorter term costs less but may leave a gap.

You can also layer policies. For example, buy a larger short term and a smaller long term. This can cost less than one large long policy. Ask an agent to price both.

## How much coverage do I need?

Use a needs analysis, not a guess. Add income replacement, debts, funeral costs, and future costs like college. Subtract savings and existing coverage. The [DIME method](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/dime-method) (debt, income, mortgage, education) is one simple way to start. See also [needs analysis](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/needs-analysis).

## What happens when the term ends?

You have a few paths. Not every policy offers all of them.

Check for a [convertible term](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/convertible-term) feature before you buy. A policy with a return of premium rider refunds premiums if you outlive the term, but it costs more. See [return of premium](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/return-of-premium-term).

## What affects the price?

Age, health, tobacco use, build, term, amount, state, and carrier. Different carriers weigh these factors differently, so the same person gets different quotes. Read our page on [how much life insurance costs](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/cost).

## How do I compare term carriers?

1. Get quotes for the same amount, term, and health class.
2. Check if the premium is guaranteed level for the full term.
3. Check conversion rights, deadline, and which products you can convert to.
4. Compare underwriting: fully underwritten may be cheaper than no-exam. See [no-exam life insurance](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/no-exam-life-insurance).
5. Look at the carrier’s complaint record on your state insurance department site.

## What should I ask an agent?

- Is this premium guaranteed for the whole term?
- Can I convert, and until when?
- What would the price be at a longer or shorter term?
- What are the exclusions? The [contestability period](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/contestability-period) is usually two years, per the [NAIC](https://content.naic.org/sites/default/files/legacy/mcas_training/2018/MCAS_Life_and_Annuity-Handout.pdf).
- What is the free look period? States give at least 10 days in many cases, per [South Carolina’s insurance department](https://online.doi.sc.gov/Eng/Public/Faqs/lifefaq.aspx).
- Which riders are worth it for me, and which are not?

## Frequently asked questions

### How does term life insurance work?

You pay premiums for a chosen term. If you die during the term, the insurer pays the death benefit to your beneficiary. If you outlive the term, coverage ends and nothing is paid, unless you bought a return of premium rider. Premiums on level term stay the same for the whole term.

### What happens when my term life policy ends?

Coverage stops. Some policies let you renew year by year at a much higher rate. Some let you convert to permanent coverage without new health questions, usually before a deadline. Others let you buy a new policy at your older age. Ask which options your policy has.

### How much term life insurance do I need?

Add what your family would need: income to replace, debts, mortgage, childcare, and college, then subtract existing savings and coverage. Rules of thumb exist, but your numbers matter more. An agent can walk through a needs analysis with you on a call.

### Is term life insurance better than whole life?

It depends on the goal. Term is better for a temporary, large need at a low price. Whole life fits a permanent need, like leaving money to heirs or covering final costs. Many families buy term first and add small permanent coverage later.

### Can I get term life insurance after 60?

Often yes, though prices are higher and some carriers cap the term length by age. Health matters more. Some people also qualify for simplified issue coverage with no exam. Ask an agent to compare fully underwritten and simplified options for your age.

### Do I need a medical exam for term life?

Not always. Some policies are fully underwritten with an exam. Others use accelerated underwriting or simplified issue, which rely on health questions and database checks. No-exam policies can cost more. See our no-exam life insurance page for the trade-offs.
