# Whole life insurance: how cash value works, what it costs, and who it fits

Whole life insurance covers you for your entire life if you keep paying. It has a fixed death benefit, level premiums, and a cash value that grows over time. It costs more than term coverage for the same amount. It fits lifelong needs, such as final costs or leaving money to heirs.

01

## Lifetime coverage

The policy stays in force for life as long as you pay the premiums.

02

## Level premiums

Traditional whole life premiums are designed to stay the same. That helps on a fixed income.

03

## Cash value

Part of each premium builds cash value. It grows slowly at first. You can borrow against it.

04

## Higher price than term

You pay more for the same death benefit because coverage lasts for life and builds value.

05

## Dividends are not guaranteed

Some policies, called participating, may pay dividends. The insurer decides each year and may pay none.

## What is whole life insurance?

Whole life insurance is permanent coverage. It stays in force for your whole life if you pay the premiums. The [NAIC](https://content.naic.org/insurance-topics/life-insurance) says whole life builds cash value that grows tax-deferred, that policyholders can borrow against it, and that state law requires nonforfeiture values if the policy lapses or is surrendered.

Epic Life Group is an independent agency, not an insurer. Our licensed agents compare whole life products across carriers by phone.

## How does whole life insurance work?

Each premium pays for the death benefit, the insurer’s costs, and the cash value. The death benefit and the premium are designed to stay level. The cash value follows a schedule in the contract.

Feature

What it means

Death benefit

Fixed amount paid to your beneficiary, generally not taxable income per [IRS Publication 525](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p525)

Premium

Designed to stay level for life

Cash value

Grows on a schedule; slow in early years

Policy loans

You can borrow against cash value; interest accrues

Dividends

Possible in [participating policies](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/participating-policy); never guaranteed

## Whole life vs term: which is right?

Question

Term

Whole life

Need for a few decades?

Often a better fit

Costs more

Need for life?

Ends too soon

Built for it

Want cash value?

None

Yes

Lowest price for large coverage?

Usually

Usually not

See [term life insurance](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/term-life) for the other side of the comparison.

## Who is whole life a good fit for?

- People who want coverage that cannot expire, such as for final costs. See [final expense insurance](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/final-expense).
- Parents or grandparents planning to leave a set amount to heirs.
- People with a special-needs dependent who will need support for life.
- Those who value level premiums and guarantees and can afford the higher cost.

## Who should consider something else?

- Families that need large coverage at a low price for a set period. Term often gives more coverage for the money.
- People who may not keep paying for many years. Early surrender often returns less than you paid.
- Anyone buying mainly as an investment. Ask for the guaranteed column of the illustration. Do not rely on projected dividends.

## What does whole life cost?

It costs more than term for the same death benefit. Price depends on age, health, tobacco use, amount, and carrier. We do not publish rate tables. For a framework, see [how much life insurance costs](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/life-insurance/cost). Smaller policies for older buyers may cost far less in total, because the amounts are smaller.

## What are participating policies and dividends?

A [participating policy](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/participating-policy) may pay a [dividend](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/dividend) based on the insurer’s results. You may take it in cash, reduce premiums, buy more coverage, or leave it to earn interest. Dividends are not guaranteed. Past dividends do not promise future ones.

## What happens if I stop paying?

The policy may lapse, but you have [nonforfeiture options](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/nonforfeiture-options). You can take the [cash surrender value](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/cash-surrender-value), use it for a [reduced paid-up](https://epicline.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/reduced-paid-up) policy, or use it for extended term. A loan that grows beyond the cash value can also end the policy. If that happens, a tax bill can follow. Ask a tax professional.

## How do I compare whole life carriers?

1. Compare the guaranteed values, not just projected values.
2. Check if the policy is participating and the carrier’s dividend history, framed as history only.
3. Compare the premium, the death benefit, and the cash value in year 1, 5, 10, and 20.
4. Look at loan interest rates and terms.
5. Check issue ages and limits, and the carrier’s complaint record with your state department of insurance.

## What should I ask an agent?

- What are the guaranteed cash values in years 1, 5, and 10?
- What is the surrender charge or loss if I cancel early?
- Is this policy participating? How are dividends used here?
- What is the loan interest rate?
- What is the free look period? States give at least 10 days in many cases, per [South Carolina’s insurance department](https://online.doi.sc.gov/Eng/Public/Faqs/lifefaq.aspx).
- Why this carrier instead of others?

## Frequently asked questions

### How does whole life insurance work?

You pay a level premium. The insurer guarantees a death benefit for life, and part of your premium builds cash value at a guaranteed rate. Participating policies may also pay dividends, which are not guaranteed. You can borrow against the cash value or surrender the policy for it, subject to charges.

### Is whole life insurance a good investment?

Treat it as insurance first. Cash value grows slowly, early years often show little, and surrender can cost you. It can suit people who want a permanent death benefit and a conservative, guaranteed component. If your main goal is investing, compare other options and ask for guaranteed values, not just projections.

### What is the difference between whole life and term?

Term covers a set period and has no cash value. Whole life covers your lifetime and builds cash value. Whole life costs more for the same death benefit. Many families use term for large temporary needs and whole life for smaller permanent ones.

### What happens if I stop paying whole life premiums?

State law requires nonforfeiture options, according to the NAIC. In general you may take the cash value, use it to buy reduced paid-up coverage, or use it for extended term coverage. Exact options depend on your policy. Ask the agent to show you these in writing before you buy.

### Can I borrow against whole life insurance?

Yes, once there is enough cash value. A policy loan is a loan from the insurer using your cash value as collateral. Interest accrues, and unpaid loans reduce the death benefit. A lapse with a large loan can create a tax bill. Check with a tax professional.

### Can I get whole life after age 70?

Often yes, in smaller amounts. Many carriers issue whole life into the 80s, and some beyond. Health affects price and type. Simplified or guaranteed issue plans may be available if you cannot pass full underwriting. Maximum ages differ by carrier.
