Accidental Death Benefit Rider

An accidental death benefit rider pays an extra amount, often equal to the base death benefit, if the insured dies from a covered accident. It is added to a life insurance policy for a modest premium.

Why it matters

The rider sometimes pays double the base benefit, which is why it is called double indemnity. It applies only to deaths caused by accidents as defined in the rider, and it excludes certain activities and events. Many riders end at a set age. Because most deaths are due to illness, the rider adds protection for a narrow risk. Compare the cost with how much extra coverage you would receive. Terms vary by carrier and state.
