Compensation

As-earned Commission

As-earned commission is paid only as the customer pays each premium, rather than in a lump sum up front. It carries little chargeback risk but pays more slowly.

Why it matters

The agent is paid month by month as premiums are collected. If the customer stops paying, the commission stops, and nothing is owed back. Some carriers let agents choose between as-earned and advanced pay. Compare cash flow needs with risk tolerance. It suits agents who prefer low risk and can wait for pay, while advanced pay suits faster cash flow.
