Funeral and end-of-life

Medical Debt

Medical debt is money owed for health care services, such as hospital stays, doctor visits, or treatment. It can end up with a collector if bills go unpaid.

Why it matters

After a death, medical bills are generally paid from the estate and not by family members, though state law and co-signed accounts can change this. Families should ask for itemized bills and not assume a debt is correct. The CFPB explains debt collection rights, including the right to ask for validation. Life insurance proceeds paid to a named beneficiary are generally protected in many states, but rules vary. A final expense plan can ease the burden.
