Disability Income Rider

A disability income rider pays a monthly benefit to the insured if disability prevents them from working. It is added to a life insurance policy and is separate from the death benefit.

Why it matters

The rider helps replace part of a paycheck during a long disability. It usually has a waiting period, a benefit limit, and a definition of disability that differs by carrier. It is not the same as a standalone disability income policy, which typically offers more coverage. Some carriers also offer a waiver of premium rider for disability. Availability varies by carrier and state, so ask what is offered and compare it with a separate policy.
