Waiver of Premium Rider

A waiver of premium rider is an add-on that stops premium payments on a life insurance policy if the insured becomes disabled or has a covered illness, while the coverage stays in force.

Why it matters

This rider protects the policy from lapsing when income stops. Carriers usually require a waiting period, such as six months of disability, before premiums are waived. The definition of disability differs by carrier, and some riders end at a certain age. The rider adds to the cost of the policy. It can matter most for permanent policies that a family wants to keep for life. Ask how the disability is defined and when benefits stop.
