Free Look

Free look is the period after a policy is delivered during which the owner can review it and cancel for a refund of premiums. The length is set by state law and the policy, and often ranges from 10 to 30 days.

Why it matters

Free look gives families time to read the contract and confirm it matches what they were told. If the owner returns the policy within the period, the insurer generally refunds the premium paid. Replacement policies and annuities may have longer periods in some states. Check the policy cover page for the date and the cancellation steps. Agents earn commission only if the policy stays in force, so a cancellation can affect them too.
