Compliance and regulation

State Insurance Code

A state insurance code is the set of laws that govern insurance in a state. It covers licensing, policy terms, advertising, claims handling, and consumer protection.

Why it matters

Insurance is mainly regulated by states, not the federal government. Each state has its own code and a department of insurance that enforces it. Many states base rules on NAIC model laws, but the details differ, such as free look length and replacement forms. Agents must follow the code in the state where the client lives. Families can find their state's department through the NAIC directory and file complaints there.
