Group Life Insurance

Group life insurance is a single policy that covers many people, usually employees of one company or members of an association. The employer or group holds the master policy, and each member receives a certificate.

Why it matters

Group life is often cheap or free to the employee, with coverage of a set amount or a multiple of salary. It usually ends when employment ends, though some plans allow conversion to an individual policy within a short deadline. The amount may not be enough for a family's needs. Agents often advise people to treat group coverage as a base and to add an individual policy they own. Conversion rights and portability vary by plan and state.
