Guaranteed Insurability Rider

A guaranteed insurability rider is an add-on that lets the policy owner buy more coverage at certain ages or life events, such as marriage or the birth of a child, without a new medical exam.

Why it matters

The rider protects the right to add coverage if health declines. Option dates, the amount available at each date, and the age limits are set in the contract, so the choice is not open ended. Each increase raises premiums based on the age at that time. The rider costs extra, and young buyers often find it most useful. Terms differ by carrier and state, so check the option schedule.
