Child Term Rider

A child term rider adds term life coverage on the insured's children under a parent's policy. Coverage is usually a small amount and covers all eligible children for one extra premium.

Why it matters

The rider can pay funeral and related costs if a child dies. Many riders allow the child to convert to a separate permanent policy at adulthood without a medical exam, up to a stated amount. Coverage typically ends when the child reaches a set age, often 25. Amounts, ages, and conversion rules vary by carrier and state. Families should compare the rider with a separate children's policy, which can offer lifetime coverage.
