Agent licensing and appointments

Line Of Authority

A line of authority is the type of insurance a license allows an agent to sell, such as life, accident and health, or property and casualty. A state lists each line on the license.

Why it matters

An agent licensed only for life cannot sell health or auto policies. Common lines for life agents are life and accident and health, and some states use different names. Adding a line usually means more study and another exam. Check the license before quoting a product, since selling outside it is a violation.
