Agent licensing and appointments

Producer License

A producer license is a state-issued credential that lets a person sell, solicit, or negotiate insurance. States issue it by line of authority, such as life, and the holder must follow that state's insurance laws.

Why it matters

Nobody can legally sell life insurance to a family without one. Each state sets its own requirements, though most use a common process through the NAIC. Typical steps include pre-licensing study, a state exam, fingerprints, and a background check. A new agent should check the home state's rules first, because fees and study hours differ. Selling without a valid license can bring fines and loss of commissions.
