Agent licensing and appointments

Nonresident License

A nonresident license lets an agent who is licensed in a home state sell insurance to people in another state. The agent applies to each additional state and pays that state's fee.

Why it matters

Telesales agents often serve callers in many states, so they hold several nonresident licenses. Most states offer a simple application that relies on the home state license, with no new exam in many cases. Each state still has its own fees, renewal dates, and continuing education rules. An agent may only sell in states where the license is active. Check each state before taking a call from a new area.
