Agent licensing and appointments

National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR)

NIPR is the National Insurance Producer Registry, a nonprofit affiliate of the NAIC. It runs systems that help agents apply for and renew licenses and help carriers verify them.

Why it matters

Agents use NIPR to apply for resident and nonresident licenses in many states, renew them, and look up their NPN. Carriers use its tools to check that an agent is licensed before appointing the agent. Not every state process runs through NIPR, and fees vary. Using one online system saves time when an agent holds licenses in many states.
