Agent licensing and appointments

National Producer Number (NPN)

An NPN, or National Producer Number, is a unique identifier assigned to an insurance agent or agency. It follows the producer in every state and stays the same for the whole career.

Why it matters

Carriers and states use the NPN to match an agent's licenses, appointments, and records. It is assigned during the first license application. Agents need it for contracting forms and can look it up on the NIPR site. The NPN is not the same as a state license number, which differs by state. Keep it handy, since almost every carrier form asks for it.
