Agent licensing and appointments

License Reciprocity

License reciprocity means one state accepts an agent's license from another state when it issues a nonresident license. It reduces repeat exams and lets agents expand into new states faster.

Why it matters

The NAIC encourages states to follow uniform licensing standards, and federal law pushed states toward reciprocity for nonresident producers. In practice, a state with reciprocity may waive pre-licensing study or the exam for an agent already licensed at home. Fees, background checks, and continuing education may still apply. Reciprocity is not identical in every state, so an agent should read each state's page before applying.
