Agent licensing and appointments

Pre-licensing Education

Pre-licensing education is the course study many states require before a person can take the insurance exam. Hours and approved providers vary by state and by license type.

Why it matters

A new life insurance agent usually completes a state-approved course, online or in a classroom, and gets a completion certificate. That certificate is needed to schedule the state exam in many states. Some states require no course at all. Nonresident applicants are often exempt if they are already licensed at home. Check the state insurance department for the exact hours before paying for a course.
