Compensation

Vesting

Vesting means an agent gains a right to something over time or on meeting conditions, such as the right to keep earning renewal commissions after leaving. The contract sets the rules.

Why it matters

A vested agent keeps getting paid on earlier sales even if they change agencies, at least under the terms. An unvested agent may lose that income. Vesting rules differ widely across agencies and carriers. Get the schedule in writing, including what ends vesting. Example: an agent may vest after two years, and before that lose renewals on leaving.
