Compliance and regulation

GLBA

GLBA is the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, a federal law that requires financial institutions, including insurers and agents, to explain how they share customer data and to protect that data.

Why it matters

GLBA led to the privacy notices that customers receive when they buy financial products. It also supports safeguards for nonpublic personal information. State insurance regulators enforce privacy rules for insurance, often based on NAIC model rules. Customers may have the right to opt out of some sharing with unrelated companies. Agents should protect client data and follow their carrier and agency data policies. Families can ask how their information is used.
