STIR/SHAKEN

STIR/SHAKEN is a set of technical standards that lets phone carriers verify that a caller ID is real. It is meant to reduce spoofed and scam calls.

Why it matters

The FCC requires phone providers to use call authentication so that a caller's number can be checked as it moves across networks. Calls may then show a verified status on some phones. A verified label does not prove a call is wanted or lawful. Agencies that call out should use properly registered numbers, because mislabeled calls can be blocked. Families should still be careful about sharing personal details with unknown callers.
