What is guaranteed issue life insurance?
Guaranteed issue life insurance accepts you without health questions or a medical exam, if you meet the carrier’s age and state rules. It is usually a small whole life policy. It is the easiest life insurance to get and, per dollar of coverage, among the most expensive.
Epic Life Group is an independent agency, not an insurer. Ask a licensed agent whether a simplified issue policy might fit before you settle on guaranteed issue.
How does the waiting period work?
Because the insurer cannot screen out sick applicants, it limits risk in the early years. This is often called a graded death benefit or a modified benefit. Terms vary, so treat the numbers below as typical, not universal.
| If death happens | Typical result |
|---|---|
| By accident, in the waiting period | Often paid in full |
| By illness, in the waiting period | Premiums paid plus interest, in many plans |
| After the waiting period | Full death benefit |
A modified death benefit works the same way. The waiting period is often about two to three years.

Who is guaranteed issue a good fit for?
- People who were declined for other life insurance.
- People with serious conditions who want a small payout for final costs.
- Seniors who need a plan and do not want to answer health questions.
- Families who want a guaranteed way to cover part of a funeral. See final expense insurance.
Who should try other plans first?
- Healthy people. Term or whole life will usually cost less.
- Those with moderate health issues. Many carriers offer graded or level final expense plans.
- Anyone who needs a large amount. Guaranteed issue limits are low.
- Anyone who may be hospitalized soon. Waiting periods apply, so an early illness death might not pay the full benefit.
Answer health questions truthfully on any plan. A false answer can lead to a denied claim later.
What does it cost?
Price depends on age, sex, coverage amount, state, and carrier. Older ages cost more. Compared to simplified issue, guaranteed issue costs more per dollar of coverage. We do not publish rates, because they differ by carrier and change. To see how pricing works in general, read how much life insurance costs.
How do I compare guaranteed issue carriers?
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Length of waiting period | Two years and three years differ |
| What is paid in the waiting period | Premiums back, or premiums plus interest |
| Accidental death rule | Is it paid in full from day one? |
| Maximum coverage amount | Does it cover your goal? |
| Issue ages | Some carriers stop sooner than others |
| Premium guarantee | Is the rate level for life? |
| Carrier complaint record | Check your state insurance department |
What should I ask an agent?
- Did you check whether I could qualify for simplified issue or a graded plan first?
- What is the exact waiting period, and what does my family get if I die in it?
- What is paid for accidental death in the first two years?
- Is the premium guaranteed never to rise?
- What are the free look rules? States give at least 10 days in many cases, per South Carolina’s insurance department.
- What happens if I miss a payment?
The death benefit is generally not taxable income to the beneficiary, per IRS Publication 525. Interest can be taxed.

Frequently asked questions
What is guaranteed issue life insurance?
It is life insurance with no health questions and no medical exam. If you are in the eligible age range and state, you are accepted. It is usually small whole life coverage. The trade-off is a waiting period before the full death benefit applies, higher cost, and low maximum coverage.
What is the waiting period on guaranteed issue?
It is a period, often about two to three years, during which a death from natural causes pays only a refund of premiums, usually with interest. Accidental death is often covered in full from day one. The length and terms differ by carrier, so read the policy before you buy.
Is guaranteed issue the same as simplified issue?
No. Simplified issue asks a short set of health questions and may pay in full from day one. Guaranteed issue asks none and uses a waiting period. If you can pass the health questions, simplified issue is often cheaper and gives more coverage. Your agent should check that first.
Who can get guaranteed issue life insurance?
Usually people within a set age range, such as the 50s to the 80s, though limits differ by carrier and state. It suits people who were declined or who expect to be declined for other plans. Approval means you meet the age and state rules, not that the price is best.
Does guaranteed issue pay for a funeral?
Yes, after the waiting period for a natural death, and sooner for an accident in many plans. The benefit is cash to your beneficiary. Amounts are limited, so it may not cover everything. Check what a funeral costs where you live and compare with the face amount.
Is guaranteed issue worth it?
It can be, if you cannot qualify for other plans and want to leave something for final costs. It is a poor value if you can get simplified issue instead. Weigh the waiting period, the price, and what your family needs. An agent can check other plans first.
