How much does life insurance cost, and what drives the price?

Life insurance cost depends on your age, health, tobacco use, coverage amount, policy type, term, state, and carrier. Term costs the least for the same death benefit. Whole life and final expense cost more because they last for life. There is no single average that fits you, so get quotes from several carriers.

01

No single price

Two people of the same age can get very different quotes. Health, tobacco use, and carrier all change the number.

02

Policy type is the biggest lever

Term costs less than whole life or final expense for the same death benefit, because it is temporary.

03

Age raises price

Premiums rise with the age you buy at. Locking in earlier is usually cheaper.

04

Carriers price differently

Each carrier weighs health factors in its own way. Comparing is the best way to find a lower price.

05

Cheapest is not best

A cheap graded plan can pay less than a pricier level plan. Compare benefits, not only the premium.

How much does life insurance cost?

There is no honest single answer. Price depends on who you are, what you buy, and which carrier you pick. A young, healthy non-smoker buying 20-year term pays very little compared with a 75-year-old buying whole life.

We do not publish a rate table on this page. Rates change, carriers differ, and any table we could show would not be your price. Cited sample prices from outside sources would also age quickly. Instead, this page shows what moves the price so you can read any quote with confidence.

What affects the price of life insurance?

Factor How it affects price
Age at purchase Older means higher price per dollar of coverage
Health and history Conditions, build, and prescriptions can raise the class or price
Tobacco use Higher rates, often for years after quitting
Policy type Term costs least; whole life and final expense cost more
Coverage amount More coverage costs more, but not always in a straight line
Term length Longer terms cost more per month
Sex Rates often differ by sex
State Rules and taxes differ by state
Carrier Each carrier weighs risk in its own way
Riders Add-ons cost extra

Insurers place you into an underwriting class such as preferred, standard, or a rated class. See also risk class and premium rate.

Which type of coverage costs the most and least?

Type Relative cost for the same death benefit Why
Term life Lowest Temporary, no cash value
Whole life Higher Lifetime coverage, cash value
Final expense High per dollar, low total Small amounts, older buyers
Guaranteed issue Highest per dollar No health screening
Indexed universal life Varies widely Flexible, charges inside the policy
Accidental death Low Covers only accidents

The NAIC notes that term is generally cheaper than permanent coverage, especially in the early years.

What does a funeral cost, for final expense sizing?

The National Funeral Directors Association reports 2023 median funeral home charges of $8,300 for a funeral with viewing and burial, and $6,280 for a funeral with viewing and cremation, as reproduced by Dignity Memorial. These medians exclude cemetery and other third-party costs. Prices vary by region. We did not verify the figures on the NFDA site.

The FTC Funeral Rule lets you get itemized prices by phone from funeral homes. Use local prices to choose a coverage amount.

Why is it more expensive for seniors?

The chance of a claim rises with age, so the premium per dollar of coverage rises too. Health conditions add to it. For many seniors the goal is a smaller policy that fits the budget. See life insurance for seniors and final expense insurance cost.

How can I lower my premium?

  1. Compare several carriers. This is the biggest single step.
  2. Buy sooner rather than later.
  3. Choose the right term, not the longest one.
  4. Layer coverage: a larger short term and a smaller long one.
  5. Skip riders you do not need.
  6. Quit tobacco and ask each carrier when you can apply for non-tobacco rates.
  7. Pay annually if the carrier charges extra for monthly billing. Ask for the difference.
  8. Check whether a no-exam policy costs more than one with an exam. See no-exam life insurance.

Why do quotes differ so much across carriers?

Carriers use their own data and appetite for risk. One may like your health condition, and another may not. That is why the same person can get a standard class at one carrier and a rated class at another. It is also why a broker that compares carriers can find a lower price than one carrier alone. Carriers also check records such as the MIB database and prescription history, as MIB describes.

How much coverage should I buy?

Start with a needs analysis. Use the DIME method as a first pass, or see needs analysis and income replacement. Then see what fits your budget. A smaller policy you can keep is better than a large one that lapses.

What should I ask an agent?

  • What is the price for the same amount from at least three carriers?
  • Is the premium guaranteed to stay level?
  • What class did I get, and what would improve it?
  • What does the cheapest option give up?
  • What is the free look period? States give at least 10 days in many cases, per South Carolina’s insurance department.

Death benefits are generally not taxable income to the beneficiary under IRS Publication 525.

Frequently asked questions

How much does life insurance cost per month?

It depends on your age, health, tobacco use, policy type, amount, term, and carrier. A young, healthy non-smoker buying term pays far less than an older person buying whole life. We do not publish rate tables because one number would mislead. A licensed agent can quote real carriers on a call.

What is the cheapest type of life insurance?

Term life is usually the cheapest for the same death benefit, because coverage ends after a set period. Permanent coverage such as whole life costs more because it lasts for life and builds cash value. For some older or ill buyers, term may not be available, and final expense may be the main option.

Why is life insurance more expensive for seniors?

Insurers price the risk of paying a claim sooner. The chance of death rises with age, so older buyers pay more per dollar of coverage. Health conditions can add to the price or limit your choices. Comparing carriers can reduce the gap.

Does smoking raise life insurance rates?

Yes. Carriers use separate tobacco rates, and they are higher. Some carriers offer non-tobacco rates after you quit for a set period, such as 12 months. The period differs by carrier. Ask each carrier for its rule, and be honest in your application.

How can I lower my life insurance premium?

Compare several carriers, buy earlier, choose the right term instead of an extra-long one, and consider a smaller amount if it meets your needs. Quitting tobacco and improving health can help at the next renewal or a new application. Avoid dropping needed coverage to save a little.

How much life insurance do I need?

Add income to replace, debts, mortgage, childcare, final costs, and future goals like college. Subtract savings and existing coverage. The result is a starting number. An agent can help with a needs analysis, and you can adjust amounts to fit your budget.
