Sales and lead terms

Direct Mail Lead

A direct mail lead is a prospect who answered a mailed advertisement, usually by returning a reply card or calling a number on the mailer. The person asked for information, which makes the lead warmer than a cold contact.

Why it matters

Direct mail is common in final expense and senior markets. The response card or call usually shows interest in a specific product. Mail leads can take longer to arrive and cost can vary by list, region, and age group. Mailers must follow advertising rules, and state insurance departments can review them. Federal telemarketing rules treat some calls that follow a direct mail solicitation differently, but disclosures still apply. Agents should confirm the rules with their compliance team.
