E-Application (e-app)

An e-application is a life insurance application completed and submitted electronically instead of on paper. Many carriers offer e-apps with built-in questions, checks, and electronic signatures.

Why it matters

E-apps speed up the process, since answers go straight to the carrier and many errors are caught on the screen. They are used in phone sales, where the agent often completes the form with the applicant. Electronic signatures are valid under federal law when consumers agree to do business electronically. Carriers set their own rules for which products and states allow e-apps. Families should review answers carefully, because wrong health answers can cause claim problems later.
