E-Sign

E-sign is short for electronic signature. Under the federal E-SIGN Act, an electronic signature can have the same legal effect as a handwritten one, if the signer agrees to use it.

Why it matters

E-sign tools let applicants sign an insurance application or form online or by phone. The process records who signed and when. Consumers must agree to receive records electronically and can ask for paper. Carriers decide which forms accept e-signatures, and state rules can add steps. Families should read documents before signing and download a copy. Agents should use the carrier's approved system only.
