Compliance and regulation

National Do Not Call Registry

The National Do Not Call Registry is a federal list of phone numbers whose owners asked not to receive telemarketing calls. It is run by the Federal Trade Commission, and registration is free.

Why it matters

Once a number is on the registry, telemarketers have a set time to stop calling it. The list does not stop all calls. Political calls, charity calls, surveys, and calls from companies with a business relationship may still be allowed. Registration does not expire. Telemarketers must buy access to the list and remove listed numbers from their call lists. Families can report violations at donotcall.gov. Some states add their own rules.
